Egyptian Earth: Translations Book Club - Wallsend Library
Throughout 2021 we will be reading, discussing and responding to works written by authors who write in Arabic and whose works have been translated into English.
For our January discussion we will be reading Egyptian Earth by Abdel Rahman al Sharqawi. Hosted by Ashraf Abdelbaky - Interpreter and doctoral UON student.
Set in the 1930s and upheld as a masterpiece of modern Arabic literature Egyptian Earth, charts a 12-year-old boy returning from his school in Cairo to his village, where a decree threatens to disrupt community life. However, the schoolmaster urges the villages to rebel:
“This was a heroic village all its life...this was their water, they must have it, whatever means they take!”
