If you are coming to Newcastle for the January long weekend, we encourage you to check out Ngarrama, happening January 25 in King Edward Park.
Ngarrama - A Cultural Celebration in Newcastle
Set in the beautiful outdoor ampitheatre of King Edward park, this free community event is an invitation from the University of Newcastle in partnership with Awabakal Ltd, the City of Newcastle and NGM Group (Newcastle Greater Mutual Group) to bring your friends, family and a picnic blanket to engage in meaningful reconciliation through truth-telling, performances, song, and historical acceptance.
Now in its fourth year, Ngarrama aims to consider traditional life in Newcastle before 1788, and was inspired by Sydney’s Vigil at Barangaroo.
With Jodan Perry as MC, this year's event includes a welcome to country, traditional dance, music, storytelling, and knowledge sharing. It will feature performances from MariMayi, Midnight Dreaming, Winanga-y Dreaming, and Minimbah Dancers.
Local theatre and puppetry company, Curious Legends, will also bring First Nations stories to life and light up the night with their illuminated puppets and lantern parade.
The word Ngarrama translates to ‘to sit, listen, and know,’ which embodies the night of reflection and celebration. Ngarrama celebrates the rich culture of all First Nations people, in particular the Awabakal and Worimi people, the traditional owners of the land upon which Newcastle (Mooloobinba) now stands.
Celebrate your Australia Day long weekend in Newcastle and include an evening of education and reflection in the heart of the city.
