Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club - Sailing Academy

Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club is located at Wickham on the shores of the Port of Newcastle, NSW. The Club’s precinct is a waterfront stroll from the city and includes a sailing academy, marina, cafes, restaurants and licensed clubhouse.

The active Sailing Academy offers a wide range of learn-to-sail courses and fun sailing experiences for both children and adults. As an "Australian Sailing" accredited centre, you can be assured of skilled instructors and a high standard of delivery.

Aboard their fleet of six 24 foot inshore keelboats or 12 Tackers dinghies for kids, they aim to offer you an experience and view of Newcastle like no other. Courses range in length from a quick two-hour Friday Twilight sail, to a three-hour 'taste' of weekend sailing, to a regular four-session course or a week-long school holiday program.

The Courses and Experiences include: "Discover Sailing" Experiences, Women's Sailing courses "Tackers" kids learn to sail programs "OutThereSailing" for adventurous teens, Family Sailing Adventures, Friday Twilight Sailing, and Start Crewing keelboat courses.

Given the wonderful location and vista of Newcastle Harbour, the Academy instructors aim to give every participant an experience they will thoroughly enjoy and long remember.

With an objective of developing and promoting sailing in Newcastle, the club is focused on maintaining its welcoming approach and hospitable charm to both “old salts” and those new to sailing.

A relaxing twilight sail on the waters of Newcastle Harbour. Your accredited sailing instructor will guide you through the basics, so absolutely no prior experience is necessary. Enjoy sailing on a 'Force24' inshore keelboat in a crew of five, learning and performing sailing maoeuvers such as raising sails, changing sides during tacking, and pulling on ropes. Immerse yourself in the fun new environment, driven by the power of sail as the sun sets over Newcastle, allowing you to take in the city sights from a completely different angle. Once back in the marina, you and your crew can retire to the Clubhouse to enjoy a refreshing 'sundowner' drink by the water.

Are your kids keen to give sailing a try? We offer introductory sailing experiences for both junior (6 - 12 years) and youth (11 - 17years) sailors. We cater for complete beginners so no previously sailing or boating experience is required. These sessions allow the kids to get a 'taste' of sailing to see what it's all about. They will be with other kids their age and have the chance to do something, new, fun and adventurous. Our junior program is a 'Tackers Intro'; a half-day session sailing on small purpose-built dinghies. The children will sail in pairs under the supervision of our Tacker Leader and assistant instructors. Our youth program is an 'OutThere Sailing Experience'; a full-day session sailing on a small inshore keelboat with an instructor on board and up to three other participants. These introductory sessions are all about the kids having fun in a safe and friendly environment. Hopefully they will love it and be keen to try one of our sailing courses . . .
