Sandgate Cemetery
Sandgate Cemetery, located in Newcastle, is a historic cemetery that has been serving the community since 1881.
With over 85,000 interments, Sandgate Cemetery is the final resting place of numerous notable people including Stanley Carpenter DCM, footballer and soldier, Matthew Charlton, Leader of the Federal Opposition, and Charles Crombie DSO, WWII pilot. Additionally, Sandgate Cemetery is the resting place of over 600 Novocastrian war heroes who returned from World War 1, as well as over 230 graves where the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in foreign lands are memorialised by their families on headstones.
As a significant historical site, Sandgate Cemetery offers visitors the opportunity to reflect on the rich history of Newcastle and its people.
