Glenrock Ghost Fungus Tours


Glenrock Ghost Fungus Tours exists to show people glow-in-the-dark mushrooms each autumn in Glenrock State Conservation Area, Newcastle, NSW.

Every September, a limited series of UV night tours is run, called Black Light Nights.

Award-winning scientist, speaker and communicator, Dr Karen Livesey, will guide you safely. Explanation will be given on the science of light in nature. There will be time to take photos of the glow.

Tours are fun and are suitable for people aged 5+ (ghost mushrooms) or 8+ (UV tours) who can walk on muddy, uneven trails.

Tour Options

From the end of summer to the start of winter, there are plenty of fungi species appearing in Glenrock State Conservation Area, Newcastle, after rain. In this day time tour, a small group will be guided on foot to search for fungi along developed trails. Be prepared to walk up to 2 km on uneven, muddy ground. Your guide, Karen, is an award-winning scientist and speaker. You will learn how to find fungi, steps for identification, and their role in the ecosystem. You may also learn the physics behind fungi. This tour is suitable for ages 5+. Note that no glowing ghost fungus will be seen on this tour option. No pets are allowed and there are no facilities such as toilets in the park. Tours may be cancelled if the weather conditions require it, with full refund provided.

Join a limited season of tours in September that reveal the hidden glow of Glenrock State Conservation Area, Newcastle, NSW. In this night tour, a small group will be guided on foot to search for fluorescent scorpions, lichen, spiders and more. You will be given specialist UV equipment. Be prepared to walk up to 3 km on uneven, muddy ground. Your guide, Dr Karen Livesey, is an award-winning scientist, speaker and founder. You will learn about biofluorescence and black light. This tour is suitable for ages 8+. Note that no glowing ghost fungus will be seen on this tour option since they appear in autumn. No pets are allowed and there are no facilities such as toilets in the park. You must wear long pants, long sleeves and closed shoes for safety reasons. Friday nights offer adults-only tours (18+). Saturday nights are for all ages (8+) with an additional Wednesday tour in September school holidays.
