Glenrock Ghost Fungus Tours


Glenrock Ghost Fungus Tours exists to show people glow-in-the-dark mushrooms each autumn in Glenrock State Conservation Area, Newcastle, NSW.

An award-winning scientist and speaker will guide you safely to the ghost fungus at night, when the mushrooms appear. Explanation will be given on the role of fungus in the ecosystem and how the bioluminescent fungus produces light. There will be time to take photos of the soft green glow.

Tours are fun and are suitable for everyone aged 5+ who can walk on muddy, uneven trails.


Tour Options

From the end of summer to the start of winter, there are plenty of fungi species appearing in Glenrock State Conservation Area, Newcastle, after rain. In this day time tour, a small group will be guided on foot to search for fungi along developed trails. Be prepared to walk up to 2 km on uneven, muddy ground. Your guide, Karen, is an award-winning scientist and speaker. You will learn how to find fungi, steps for identification, and their role in the ecosystem. You may also learn the physics behind fungi. This tour is suitable for ages 5+. Note that no glowing ghost fungus will be seen on this tour option. No pets are allowed and there are no facilities such as toilets in the park. Tours may be cancelled if the weather conditions require it, with full refund provided.
