An offbeat walk worthy of your bucket list. Hickson Street Lookout to Merewether Ocean Baths. Get ready for sweeping views, a healthy dose of heart-pumping steps, relaxing rockpools, ocean baths, beaches, and café treats.

So, let's do it (at low tide only)!

The route is simple. Start at Hickson Street Lookout then head down the steps (500m) to Burwood Beach. At the beach turn left towards Merewether. Walk along the coastline for 1.2km checking out the rockpools that are revealed at low tide. Soon you'll reach the Merewether Ocean Baths where you can stop for a swim or continue along Merewether Beach. Easy as.

Treat yourself to a snack at Blue Door Kiosk, Merewether Surfhouse, or Larrie's before heading back to your car via scenic drive. Walk along until you can turn onto Lloyd Street, there you will see a staircase which takes you back to Hickson Street, and the walk is complete.

You've done it!

Tips and info:

  • Hickson Street Lookout is part of the Glenrock State Conservation Area, and is a favourite of sunset picnickers, paragliders, and even wedding ceremonies. So please be considerate of others. Mornings tend to be the quietest time to enjoy the views and nearby birdsong, but if you love a crowd vibe, then arvos are your best bet.
  • This walk includes many steps, steep inclines, and has long sections of uneven ground. If you don't think you can complete the walk but are keen to take in the views or have a swim, you can. The path to the lookout is relatively flat and there are only a few steps to the lookout area. Simply enjoy the lookout, then drive down Scenic Drive to the baths.
  • It's important to plan this walk to coincide with low tide. This will expose the rockpools and coastline, allowing you to walk safely to Merewether from Burwood Beach.
  • We happen to have done this walk from Hickson Street Lookout; however, you can easily switch things up. Start at Merewether Beach and walk up those iconic stairs from Burwood Beach to be rewarded with sweeping vistas as you catch your breath.
